Do I join DIVA by myself or do I have to find a team to play on?
DIVA has implemented a Draft Process so everyone joins DIVA as an individual. Every new member must attend at least one New Member Clinic to be watched by the Evaluation Committee. After the Clinics new members are placed into one of DIVA’s five divisions (Power, Advanced, Competitive, Intermediate or Recreational). Once we see how many members are in each division we’ll set the number of teams for that division. Captains are chosen from returning members in each division and they will select the teams. This is done in secret on Saturday afternoon, February 1st, and the teams will be announced at a party later that evening.
When are the games played?
All games are played on Friday nights at the Advantage Sports Complex. Play begins at 7:30 and continues until 12:00 midnight. No...you are not there the whole time. Because the organization has gotten so large (45-50 teams) we traditionally run two waves of play each night. There are nine courts at the gym so half the time you will play the early matches (7:30—9:45) and half the time you will play the late matches (9:45—12:00). There will be some overlap. The season begin on February 6th and ends on May 9th. We take off April 10th for Easter Weekend. We will hold a season ending, day long tournament on Saturday, May 9th.
Who officiates the matches?
We self-referee our matches. Each team will be assigned one match every night to ref. The reffing team must provide two referee’s, a scorekeeper, and two line judges. If you would like to be DIVA certified to referee or keep score you must attend a Certification Clinic. Clinics will be offered in February. Watch the website or ask your Captain for more information.
What about practice?
DIVA offers two opportunities for you to practice and further develop your volleyball skills outside of Friday night play. Each Division has a two-hour scheduled practice/open play every week. Advanced and Power is on Monday night, Competitive on Tuesday nights, Intermediate is on Wednesday nights, and Recreational is on Thursday nights. These practices are offered at City of Dallas Recreation Centers and open to all members of that division. In addition we will be offering drill nights twice a month (Mondays) most weeks during the season so you can show up and just run drills that night to further develop core volleyball skills.
What do I get for my $120?
DIVA tries very hard to keep your registration fee as low as possible. For $120 you get 12 weeks of play, 12 weeks of practice, at least 10 weeks of drills, a t-shirt, a season-ending tournament with professional referees and awards, a season-ending banquet and a wide variety of social activities.
